Officially... Howe ends his Newcastle era
Eddie Howe, the outgoing manager of Newcastle United, officially announced his departure from the club on Friday after five seasons.
Howe, 48, led Newcastle to their first major domestic trophy in 70 years, winning the 2025 League Cup, and also guided them to Champions League qualification in 2023 and 2025 during his tenure.
Howe, who has previously managed Burnley and Bournemouth, said in a statement on Friday: "After a period of personal reflection, I have decided now is the right time for me to step down as manager of Newcastle United."
He added: "After almost five years in which I have given my life, heart, and soul to the club with great energy, I feel it is in the best interests of both myself and the club for me to resign and take a break."
He continued: "While this has been a difficult decision to make, I know it is the right one." “I have always put Newcastle’s interests before my own in every decision I have made during my time here, and this is no exception. It has been a great honor for me throughout my life to be the manager of Newcastle United.”
Howe’s departure comes after a disappointing season in which Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League, losing 17 of their 38 matches. Their final game in charge was a 4-1 defeat to Bristol City in a pre-season friendly last Wednesday.
The rest of the coaching staff – Jason Tindall, Graeme Jones, Steven Purches, and Simon Weatherstone – will also leave, along with head of performance Dan Hodges.
Howe is expected to be succeeded by German coach Matthias Jäsle, the former Al-Ahli manager who also resigned.
This change comes amid a period of significant upheaval at Newcastle.
The club sold Swedish striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool last year and has since allowed Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali to join Tottenham and English winger Anthony Gordon to move to Barcelona. Brazilian captain Bruno Guimarães may leave.
