Girona stuns Real Madrid with a draw

Real Madrid's already slim hopes of catching Barcelona in the La Liga title race suffered another blow after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Girona on Friday in Matchday 31.

The draw takes Real Madrid to 70 points, reducing the gap to leaders Barcelona to six points, with the Catalan giants having the chance to extend their lead to nine when they face Espanyol on Saturday. Girona remain in 12th place with 38 points.

In addition to their fading league title hopes, Real Madrid will travel to Bavaria to face Bayern Munich in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday, having lost the first leg 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Uruguayan midfielder Fede Valverde unleashed a powerful right-footed shot from the edge of the Girona penalty area, but Argentine goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga made a brilliant save (27). But Real's lead did not last long, as Girona responded in the 61st minute with a superb left-footed shot from Frenchman Thomas Lemar.
