Paris Saint-Germain crowned European Super Cup champions on penalties
French football club Paris Saint-Germain returned from a goal down to confirm their continental dominance after winning the UEFA Super Cup, defeating English club Tottenham Hotspur, the Europa League champions, on Wednesday at the Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy, 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in regulation time.
This is the first time the Parisian team has won the UEFA Super Cup, and the first French club to win the title.
Tottenham's Nicky van de Veen put his team ahead in the 39th minute after rebounding from a rebound after Paris goalkeeper João Palhinha's shot had been parried.
Argentinian Cristian Romero, who had been given the captain's armband hours before the match following the departure of captain Son Heung-min, added the second goal with a header from a Pedro Porro free kick. Paris Saint-Germain reduced the deficit in the 85th minute through South Korean Lee Kang-in, who fired a powerful shot from outside the penalty area past goalkeeper Guilmo Vicario.
Portuguese Goncalo Ramos equalized for Paris Saint-Germain in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time with a header from Ousmane Dembélé's cross.
The two teams went straight to penalty kicks, with Paris Saint-Germain winning after missing one and Tottenham missing two.
