Marseille advances to the quarterfinals with a 3-0 victory over Rennes
Olympique de Marseille reached the quarterfinals of the French Cup with a 3-0 win over Rennes on Tuesday at the Stade Vélodrome.
Marseille opened the scoring early through Amine Gouiri in the 2nd minute, and English striker Mason Greenwood doubled the lead in the 46th minute. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang added the third goal in the 83rd minute.
Marseille has been struggling with results, recently exiting the Champions League after a 3-0 defeat to Club Brugge, before being held to a 2-2 draw by Paris FC in Ligue 1.
The cup victory was achieved without the southern club conceding a single goal, a rare feat this season, securing their place in the quarterfinals under Italian coach Roberto De Zerbi.
This win also provides Marseille with some reassurance ahead of their clash with league leaders Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday at the Parc des Princes. In another match, Reims defeated Le Mans 3-0, with Belgian Theo Leoni scoring in the 38th and 71st minutes, and substitute Yassine Benhattab adding the third in the 84th minute.
The round of 16 continues on Wednesday with Lorient playing Paris FC, Nice facing Montpellier, Lyon taking on Laval, Toulouse meeting Amiens, and Troyes playing Lens. The round concludes on Thursday with Strasbourg hosting Monaco.
