Senegal overcomes home advantage and makes history against Morocco after decades of defeat

The Senegalese national team succeeded in breaking their home advantage, winning the Africa Cup of Nations title for the second time in their history, after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Morocco in the final match held Sunday evening at the Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

This victory brought an end to a long series of setbacks that plagued the Lions of Teranga whenever they faced the host nation in the knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations. Since 1990, the Senegalese national team had encountered a psychological and historical obstacle against the home side, starting with a 2-1 loss to Algeria in the semi-finals, followed by a similar defeat to Nigeria in the quarter-finals of the 2000 edition.

The curse continued in the 2004 edition with a quarter-final exit against Tunisia by a single goal, before suffering a 2-1 loss to Egypt in the 2006 semi-finals. Even in the most recent edition in 2023, the Senegalese team couldn't escape this scenario, drawing 1-1 with Ivory Coast in the round of 16 before being eliminated on penalties (5-4). According to the "Stats Foot" platform, this confirmed that facing the host nation in crucial matches has been a genuine historical hurdle for them.

But the Rabat final against Morocco presented a different face for Senegal. The team entered the match with great confidence and high concentration, successfully imposing their style of play until they snatched the winning goal through Pape Gueye. This goal was historic, marking Senegal's 100th goal in the history of their participation in the Africa Cup of Nations, and the first goal the team has ever scored in a final.

With this victory, the Senegalese national team secured the continental title in their fourth final appearance, finally breaking the home-field curse and confirming that their current generation is capable of overcoming psychological barriers as well as technical ones, establishing themselves as an African powerhouse that knows no limits.
