In the first challenge without Inzaghi, Inter draws with Monterrey
Inter Milan's first football team held Mexican side Monterrey to a draw in the first round of Group E of the Club World Cup on Wednesday morning.
The Italian team failed to achieve its first victory without its former coach, Simone Inzaghi, who is currently leading Al Hilal after signing with him in early June on a two-year contract.
Inter fell behind to a goal from veteran Spanish defender Sergio Ramos in the 25th minute, before Argentine Lautaro Martinez equalized in the 42nd minute.
The team, led by Romanian Cristian Chivu, Inter's new coach, also scored through Martinez in the 68th minute, but it was ruled out for offside.
Chivu, who was appointed two weeks ago to succeed Inzaghi, had been hoping to turn the page on the past after the devastating 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final, which cost the team the league title to Napoli by one point. Inter will play their next match against Japan's Urawa Red Diamonds on Saturday in the second round, while the Mexican team will face Argentina's River Plate at dawn on Sunday.
