After 41 years... Tottenham wins European title
Tottenham Hotspur, the English football club, ended a 41-year absence from European honours by winning the Europa League, following a 1-0 victory over fellow English club Manchester United in the final at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao, Spain.
This is the third time the team, nicknamed "The Spurs," has won the competition, having previously won the competition in its former name, the UEFA Europa League, in 1972 and 1984.
The London team owes the victory to Brennan Johnson, who scored the only goal of the match in the 42nd minute. This victory secures Tottenham a place in next season's Champions League. At the San Mames Stadium, Manchester United had the greater possession, but the danger on goal was from Tottenham's players, especially Brazilian Richarlison and Brennan Johnson, who capitalized on a mistake by Manchester United's Cameroonian goalkeeper Onana to put the ball into the net and end the first half ahead.
In the second half, Manchester United continued to press, but to no avail. Tottenham goalkeeper Vicario Guglielmo was able to defend against the Red Devils' barrage of attacks, coupled with a resilient defense.
Tottenham's last European title was the UEFA Cup in 1984, while their last domestic title was the League Cup in 2008.
The continental title salvaged a poor season for Tottenham, who currently sits in 17th place with 38 points from 11 wins, five draws, and 21 defeats.
