Argentina Turns the Tables and Reaches Seventh Final
The Argentine national football team qualified for its seventh World Cup final after overturning a deficit against England to win 2-1 on Wednesday evening in Atlanta, USA.
The Three Lions opened the scoring in the 55th minute through winger Anthony Jordan and held the lead until Enzo Fernandez equalized for the Albiceleste in the 85th minute. Then, in the second minute of stoppage time (90+2), substitute striker Lautaro Martinez rose to head home a cross from Lionel Messi, sending his country to face Spain in Sunday's final.
Messi and his teammates equaled the achievement of Diego Armando Maradona's legendary generation by reaching the World Cup final in two consecutive tournaments. In total, the "Tango Dancers" will be playing in their seventh World Cup final, having previously reached it in 1930, 1978, 1986 and 1990 (with Maradona), and 2014 and 2022 (with Messi).
Argentina won the World Cup title in 1978 on home soil, in 1986 in Mexico, and again in 2022 in Qatar.
By reaching the final again, they will become the second most frequent participant in the tournament, after Germany with eight appearances, surpassing Italy.
