Van Dijk to his teammates: You gave up and we lost

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk accused his teammates of giving up and apologized to the Reds' fans following their 4-0 FA Cup defeat to Manchester City.

Van Dijk told reporters on Sunday: "I can only apologize to the fans for what we showed, especially in the second half. Obviously, you leave the dressing room with the right intentions, hoping to score to make it 2-1 as quickly as possible to change the game, but the opposite happened. Coming back from three goals down is incredibly difficult here, but you also shouldn't give up, and that's probably what happened at a certain point." The Dutch defender added: “We let down our fans, we let ourselves down, and the coach. The way we played in the second half, in particular, should hurt everyone, and it certainly hurts me. The reality is that Paris Saint-Germain is waiting for us. I watched a bit of them last Friday. It will be very difficult again, so we have to be mentally prepared as soon as possible.”

Van Dijk pointed out that he considers himself very lucky to have played for Liverpool for so many years, emphasizing that teamwork is the key factor among the players. He added, "I've been lucky enough to play for Liverpool for so many years, and the main thing we've always had is teamwork. Now, obviously, we're in a transitional phase, and we have to find that teamwork. It's difficult to perform every other day if you don't have that consistently. We have a responsibility to ourselves, and especially to the fans. If we want to achieve something this season, we have to try and do something special in the next three games. I'm trying to think about how to turn things around. We've been through this for about 75% of the season. We tend to drop back in games where we lose because of physicality, or you lose because of how much you really want to fight for the win. It's hard to accept, and everyone has to look at themselves."

Liverpool's hopes of salvaging a domestic title from a disappointing season were dashed after a 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday. After a balanced first half-hour, Liverpool succumbed when Virgil van Dijk fouled Nico O'Reilly, and Erling Haaland converted the resulting penalty.

Haaland continued his brilliance, completing a hat-trick as City scored all four goals in 18 minutes.
