Arsenal reach Champions League semi-finals for the second time in a row
Arsenal secured their place in the Champions League semi-finals with a goalless draw against Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday in the second leg of their quarter-final tie.
The Gunners progressed thanks to their 1-0 away win in the first leg a week earlier, courtesy of a stoppage-time goal from Kai Havertz. They will now face Atletico Madrid, whom they defeated 4-0 in the group stage.
This second consecutive semi-final appearance comes at a crucial time for Arsenal, who have lost three of their last four matches in all competitions before Wednesday night.
The London club missed out on a silverware season, losing the League Cup final 2-0 to Manchester City, and then exited the FA Cup in the quarter-finals at the hands of Southampton, who play in the Championship (second tier). Arsenal were the better side from the start, but without any real chances on goal, and Sporting were closer to scoring for most of the match.
