Manchester United Shakes Arsenal's Lead at Home
Manchester United continued their impressive run of form since Michael Carrick took over as interim manager from the Portuguese Ruben Amorim, defeating league leaders Arsenal 3-2 at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday in the 23rd round of the English Premier League.
United climbed to fourth place with 38 points, leading the race for Champions League qualification, after a precarious situation that recently led to Amorim's departure.
Arsenal, meanwhile, remain top of the table with 50 points, four points ahead of both Manchester City in second place and Aston Villa in third, who earlier defeated Newcastle 2-0.
Arsenal took the lead in the 29th minute with an own goal by Lisandro Martinez. However, a costly error by Martin Zubimendi in the 37th minute gifted Manchester United the equalizer. The Spanish midfielder passed the ball directly to Bryan Mbeumo, who finished brilliantly into the net.
In the 50th minute, Drogba unleashed a powerful shot that struck the crossbar before bouncing into the goal, giving United the lead. Substitute Mikel Merino then leveled the score for the home side in the 84th minute.
But Manchester United refused to give up. Just three minutes later, Cunha fired a stunning 25-meter strike into the back of the net, sending the visiting fans into raptures.
With this defeat, Arsenal failed to win for the third consecutive league match, remaining on 50 points from 23 games. Manchester City and Aston Villa both have 46 points, while Manchester United climbed to fourth place with 38 points.
