Through Ulsan... Sundowns snatches first World Cup victory
South African football team Sundowns achieved a historic 1-0 victory over South Korea's Ulsan Hyundai early Wednesday morning in the first round of Group F of the Club World Cup, currently underway in the United States.
Ikram Reiners scored Sundowns' only goal in the 36th minute of the match, which was delayed by more than an hour due to inclement weather in Orlando.
The Sundowns players celebrated their first ever victory in the Club World Cup, having lost two matches during their first participation in the tournament under its old format, which included the champions of the six continental confederations and the league champion of the host country.
Sundowns lost 2-0 to Kashima Antlers of Japan in the 2016 World Cup in Japan before collapsing 4-1 to Jeonbuk Hyundai of South Korea. The South African team topped the group with three points, benefiting from a goalless draw between Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense. Sundowns will play Dortmund next Saturday evening, while Ulsan Hyundai will face Fluminense in the second round.
